The Story
Discover the nautical charm of these elegant antique earrings, featuring intricate designs that blend classic and contemporary styles. With mid-1600s Spanish Colonial Silver Cob shipwreck coin centers, these earrings are the perfect gift for someone who is one-of-a-kind.
Cobs were hammered from the cut ends of silver bars (cabo de barra in Spanish), then trimmed to weight by hand, which is exactly the lumpy off-round outline visible here. The central design is a Jerusalem cross — sometimes called a potent cross — with arms terminating in flared T-shaped ends. That is the standard reverse used on Spanish colonial reales under the Habsburg kings, from Philip II through Charles II, continuing into the early Bourbon issues under Philip V. The dark, almost black surface with heavy pitting is the signature patina of a sea-salvaged coin. Coins from documented Spanish wrecks — the Atocha lost in 1622, the Maravillas in 1656, the Concepción in 1641, the 1715 Plate Fleet off Florida, the 1733 Fleet — all develop this corrosion pattern from centuries on the seabed before recovery and conservation.
