The Story
Deep pink spinel crosses the top of this vintage pink spinel and diamond ring in two diagonal rows, and at arm’s length the squares throw wide, striking flashes of brilliance under a lamp. A twist of gold sweeps between them, and round diamonds fill the tapered panels on either side. Together the stones weigh 1.10 carats.
The spinels grade AAAAA, the highest mark on the scale, earned at once on precision, on transparency, and on saturation that holds all the way through. For generations the trade filed this material under ruby, and the two were only separated in the second half of the eighteenth century. It is August’s birthstone, and the Greeks named it from spítha, a spark. Channel walls of 14k yellow gold carry the row with no metal breaking it, so this pink spinel and diamond ring puts a solid field of pink across the full width of the band. A square step cut gives each stone a wide flat plane, and the light lands on it in broad sheets, while the round diamonds set into the gold beside them add bright points of their own. Those diamonds are G color and near-colorless. Natural, earth-mined stones throughout. Each and every piece at Jewelry Depot is one-of-a-kind. Once it’s gone, it’s gone forever.
